Ugly Doug

Richfield, Utah - Douglas Jay Merchant, age 59, died October 25, 2006 in Richfield, Utah. He was born July 9, 1947 in Richfield, a son of John Charles and Winnie Marel Fullmer Merchant.

He graduated from Richfield High School, Class of 1965. He joined the US Army and served two tours of duty in Germany and one in Viet Nam during the Viet Nam Conflict.

He was a member of the Richfield Unit of the Utah National Guard for 10 years.

 

Doug married Katherine Outzen Merchant, December 16, 1967 in Richfield, Utah.

 

Doug was a licensed carpenter and electrician. He was a member of the LDS Church.

Doug was a very skilled man and he could fix almost anyting. He like hunting and fishing. He loved playing on his computer. Doug was a very loving person and was always helping anyone in need. He loved his family and especially his grandkids.

 

He is survived by his wife, Kathie Merchant, of Richfield; children: Tracy and Keith New of Merritt Island, Florida; Cole and Alison Merchant of Richfield; 6 grandchildren: Bryce Merchant, Whitney New, Colton Merchant, Ashley New, Jordan Merchant and Makenzie Merchant; brothers and sisters: Johnny and Paula Merchant of Salina; Sara and Creig Bodily of West Valley City; Craig and Sheri Merchant of St. George; Debbie and Phil Jolley of Emery.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Kathleen Merchant.

Funeral services were Oct. 28, in the Springer Turner Funeral Home chapel, 260 North 400 West in Richfield, with Richfield East LDS stake president, Wayne Fillmore officiating and conducting. Compassionate services were provided by the Richfield LDS 11th ward Relief Society.

A family prayer was offered by Cody Merchant, and the invocation was given by Rick Larsen.

Prelude and postlude music was performed by Linda Ogden.

Musical selections included “These Hands” by Phil and Nina Jorgensen and accompanied by Greg Jorgensen; a vocal solo, “Each Life That Touches Ours For Good” by Corwin Ogden and accompanied by Linda Ogden; and “Only The Good Die Young” a CD by Billy Joel.

Tributes were given by Alexander “Cole” Merchant, and Whitney New. Speakers included Roy Mallory, and remarks were offered by Wayne Fillmore.

The Benediction was given by Kevin Hiss.

Serving as pallbearers were Alexander Cole Merchant, Creig Bodily, Phil Jolley, Keith New, Eugene Curtis, Johnny Merchant, Craig Merchant and Larry Barney.

Honorary pallbearers were Scott Dutton, Cody Merchant, Darren Barney, Troy Shaw, Bryce Merchant, Michael Lee, Cheyenne Merchant, Jesse Curtis, Jordan Merchant, Robyn Dutton, Chris Merchant, Blake Barney, Colton Merchant and Cassidy Larsen.

Interment was in the Richfield City Cemetery with military rites accorded by the Sevier VFW Post #5050, and the 222 Field Artillery Richfield Unit of the Utah National Guard, and the dedicatory prayer given by Phil Jolley.
